Founded in 1901, the Northern California Golf Association is the largest allied golf association in the United States. The NCGA has roughly 200,000 members who belong to more than 1,300 member clubs throughout Northern California. The NCGA vision is to ensure the game is vibrant, inclusive, and accessible and is focused on enhancing the lives of Northern California golfers by helping them enjoy the benefits of golf for a lifetime. As a key partner with the USGA, the NCGA provides its members with official handicap indexes and helps oversee several critical governance areas for the game of golf. The NCGA owns and operates two golf courses (Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge), conducts more than 650 days of golf events each year, including championships and competitive golf tournaments for all abilities, and casual golf outings and trips. The NCGA also publishes NCGA Golf digital magazine and secures exclusive member discounts on products and services. The NCGA Foundation, which originally created Youth on Course, has evolved and the NCGA is also the sole member of the NCGA Foundation, which is aimed at growing the game and supporting the golf community throughout Northern California.

Position: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO), reporting to the NCGA CEO, is a strategic member of the executive leadership team. The CFO is responsible for the overall financial strategy, planning, management, and integrity of the organization, ensuring alignment with short- and long-term goals for the NCGA, the NCGA Foundation, and Poppy Holding Inc. (Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge golf courses). This role oversees all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities across the parent organization and its two affiliated entities, Poppy Holding, Inc, which is a for-profit entity, and the NCGA Foundation, a 501(c)(3), ensuring compliance with nonprofit and for-profit financial regulations and best practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Financial Leadership:

Develop annual financial plans for the organization by working with each organization and executive team members to build out budgets, combine into an overall budget for the organization, and present the plan to the Board each year.

Lead financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes across all entities.

Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team on financial performance, risks, and opportunities.

Develop short- and long-term financial strategies to support organizational goals.

Actively participate in strategic planning, scenario analysis, and decision-making at the executive level.

Leadership & Team Development:

Leads the Finance & Accounting team to support the overall NCGA strategic plan, including a focus on training and development.

Hire, train, manage, and motivate an accounting staff (including AP, AR, Payroll, and others) of 4 FTEs, assuring that the team works in a highly collaborative fashion and is well integrated with staff teams

Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountability.

Support cross-functional teams in business unit performance and programmatic budgeting.

Financial Management & Reporting:

Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, and cash management functions.

Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting including consolidated and segmented reports by entity.

Maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial systems.

Review and pay any estimated tax payments for NCGA, NCGA Foundation, and PHI. Prepare information needed for the tax return and review it before it is sent. Oversee and review the preparation of the smaller companies' tax returns

Prepare regular budget and actual expenditures reports and identify, explain, and correct variances

Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations (for both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) organizations), and other relevant regulatory frameworks.

Treasury & Investment Oversight:

Manage banking relationships, investment accounts, debt instruments, and lines of credit.

Develop and implement cash management strategies that optimize liquidity and return on assets.

Monitor and invest excess cash into Money Market accounts/Cd's for all companies, and rebalance all the investment accounts twice a year

Executive Leadership & Board Relations:

Present regular financial updates and strategic analyses to the Board(s) and executive team. Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board(s).

Partner with stakeholders to ensure financial sustainability and alignment with organizational mission and impact.

Risk Management & Compliance:

Primary lead for enterprise risk management. Monitor and mitigate financial risks; oversee insurance and risk management programs.

Ensure appropriate compliance with tax laws, audits, reporting requirements, and grants/contracts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

Minimum of 10+ years of senior financial leadership experience, including managing complex budgets and multi-entity structures.

Deep understanding of nonprofit (501(c)(3), 501(c)(6)) and for-profit financial management, compliance, and reporting.

Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and IRS regulations affecting nonprofit organizations.

Keen analytical skills and strategic data interpretation

Solid organizational, time management, and project management skills with an emphasis on managing multiple, time-sensitive tasks within a fast-paced, high-volume organization

Adept in developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures

Collaborative mentor and coach to the senior leadership team and accounting staff

Experience and ability to manage and develop team members

Experience in and commitment to increasing cultural competencies and skills to communicate diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments

Demonstrates personal accountability, leadership, teamwork, and initiative

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

CPA or MBA degree.

Experience managing or advising on endowments, reserves, or investment portfolios.

Background in association management, trade organizations, foundations, or mission-driven enterprises.

Familiarity with our current accounting software (NetSuite).

Knowledge of and passion for the game of golf (strongly preferred).

WORK SCHEDULE:

Typically Monday to Friday, with standard business hours (8am-5pm). Occasional nights and weekends may be required.

Occasional travel is required (roughly 5-10%).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time, Exempt position, with a starting salary in the range of $180,000-$215,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Some clothing will be provided, with the employee expected to source and maintain a high-standard of attire at all times. Participation in the company's 401k plan after one full year of employment. PTO, meals, and golf benefits also included.
