Job Summary

The Financial Analyst plays a pivotal role in supporting the institution's financial health and strategic objectives by analyzing financial data, preparing reports, and assisting in budget development and management. This position collaborates with various departments/divisions to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance with applicable regulations. The Financial Analyst collects and analyzes data and information to understand business conditions, requirements, specifications, and business processes relevant to the assigned function, and recommends systems that address solutions to business needs, challenges, and problems. This role identifies system strengths and weaknesses and suggests areas for improvement, and uses creativity and discretion in developing research methodologies and strategies to collect and analyze data within standard practice.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Analysis

  • Aggregates and summarizes data, as needed, for analyses and presentations. Facilitates and develops other specialized analyses or manages projects related to resource planning.

  • As necessary, drafts decision communications that include thorough analyses, plausible options, and a recommendation with a rationale for the recommendation. Completes special projects as assigned. Creates, maintains, and adjusts financial models that inform decision-making.

  • Intermittent work on monthly projections. Performs financial and business analyses using ratios, benchmarking, and other analytic tools and methods to identify trends and financial management needs. Prepares financial forecasts for various revenue and expense categories using cost modeling and simulation methods.

Budget Planning

  • Analyzes operating, capital, special projects, and other budgets to ensure accurate representation in budget planning and in the College's financial documents, including, but not limited to, budget/monthly projections. Builds relationships with cost center managers by providing assistance on financial matters, including resolving budgetary problems and understanding or applying budget policies.
  • Compiles data and prepares reports required by department and/or cost center managers for academic and budgetary planning. Participates in crafting innovative approaches to fiscal issues, processes, and practices required to address changes in the environment, technology, and administration.
  • Works with external agencies and partners to seek and/or provide information to inform budget development and decisions.

Financial Systems

  • Utilizes financial software, Workday, to track expenditures, process transactions, and generate reports. Ensures data integrity by conducting regular audits and implementing data quality measures.
  • Streamlines financial processes by recommending and implementing process improvements within Workday. Supports change management and training by developing training materials and conducting sessions to help staff effectively utilize Workday's financial modules.
  • Ensures users are proficient in navigating the system, which can lead to higher adoption rates and more efficient use of the system.

Reporting

  • Assists as needed with Workday reports. May assist with managing data updates in Workday, such as CCMs, CC VPs, as well as possible approval for budget transfers on behalf of the Budget Office. Prepares detailed budget charts, tables, and spreadsheets, as needed, in support of a variety of budgetary analyses and special projects.
  • Pulls reports for board reserve accounts and sets up budget, as necessary. Tracks and analyzes actual revenues and expenditures compared to estimates. Prepares variance analyses to report the differences in budget/actual and its impact on the College's operations. Updates various reports for review and analysis by Resource Planning & Analysis (RPA).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a closely related field

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible financial analyst and/or accounting experience

  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s)

Preferred Qualifications

  • An MBA is preferred
  • An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify a candidate.
