Interim Financial Director The Interim Financial Director provides short-term leadership and oversight of all financial operations, ensuring stability, compliance, and continuity during a transition period. This role oversees all financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls within a nonprofit environment. Manages the accounting team and is responsible for Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), reconciliations, financial reporting, and coordination with external auditors. The Interim Financial Director maintains up to date financial records, supports strategic decision making, and ensures strict adherence of nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have the ability to quickly assess environments and operate effectively in a transitional role, must be a hands-on and strategic (roll-up-your-sleeves mentality) Leader. A strong problem solver with a process improvement mindset and builds trust effectively with leadership and staff. Type: Interim / Contract Duration: 3+ months with potential for extension Start: Immediate / ASAP Key Responsibilities Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance with policies and regulation. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, and reporting efficiency Lead and manage the daily operations of the accounting department, including AP, AR, payroll processing, and general ledger maintenance. Supervise accounting staff - AP and AR coordinators Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reconciliations of all accounts. Update and maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., fund accounting, restricted vs. unrestricted funds). Prepare and review financial statements, budget reports, cash flow projections, and grant related financial documentation. Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors; coordinate annual audits and ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate. Collaborate with leadership to support budgeting, forecasting, and long term financial planning. Ensure timely processing of vendor payments, donor receipts, and other financial transactions. Support compliance with federal, state, and grant funding requirements. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit experience. Strong knowledge of AP, AR, reconciliations, and general ledger management. Experience coordinating or leading external audits. Demonstrated ability to implement and maintain internal controls. Prior experience of managing and developing accounting staff. Proficiency with nonprofit accounting software (Sage)REQUIRED Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
