Job Title: Controller

Job Description

The Controller leads the company's accounting function, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and tax regulations. This role owns the month-end close, oversees general ledger and financial reporting, manages a small accounting team, and partners closely with leadership to provide timely, insightful financial analysis that supports strategic decision-making. The position is ideal for an accounting-first leader with a strong public accounting background who thrives in a fast-growing, mission-driven organization and is interested in a natural progression toward a future Chief Accounting Officer role.

Responsibilities

Own and execute the month-end close process, including preparing and posting journal entries to ensure timely and accurate financial results.

Review and perform account reconciliations, including bank accounts and balance sheet accounts, resolving discrepancies promptly.

Support billing and invoicing reconciliations in collaboration with an external billing provider and ensure accurate entries for month-end close activities.

Assist with QuickBooks Online and Excel-based tasks to maintain accurate financial records and support reporting needs.

Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.

Conduct in-depth financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost control and operational improvement.

Provide clear, insightful financial reports and commentary to leadership to support strategic and operational decision-making.

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of approximately two accounting staff, including a Staff Accountant and a Senior Accountant, fostering a high-performance, collaborative environment.

Manage the process for contracts from a finance and accounting perspective, ensuring appropriate documentation, tracking, and financial impact assessment.

Ensure adherence to all relevant accounting standards (GAAP), including revenue recognition (ASC 606), and applicable tax regulations.

Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial and compliance risks.

Coordinate with external auditors and tax professionals to facilitate audits or reviews and support tax return preparation processes.

Calculate quarterly bonuses for corporate employees, ensuring accuracy and alignment with company policies and performance metrics.

Assist the CFO with budgeting and forecasting activities as needed, contributing financial insights and analysis.

Support the CFO with cash management activities when required, helping to optimize liquidity and working capital.

Work independently in a remote environment, managing priorities and meeting deadlines with limited supervision.

Collaborate cross-functionally across a multi-site environment to ensure consistent accounting practices and accurate financial reporting for all locations.

Essential Skills

Minimum of 5 years of experience in an accounting role, with at least 3 years at the Senior Accountant, Manager, or equivalent leadership level.

Director-level or equivalent experience with a proven track record of leading and developing accounting teams.

Strong public accounting background, preferably with audit experience.

Active or previously active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA strongly preferred.

Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including revenue recognition (ASC 606), and core accounting principles.

Hands-on experience with month-end close, general ledger accounting, and financial reporting.

Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including use of PivotTables and VLOOKUP or similar lookup functions.

Proficiency with QuickBooks Online for day-to-day accounting and reporting activities.

Experience working in a multi-site environment and managing accounting processes across multiple locations.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.

High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills in managing multiple concurrent tasks.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.

Comfort working in a remote environment with limited direct supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience at the Director of Accounting or Controller level in a growing organization.

Proven ability to design, implement, and enhance internal controls and accounting policies.

Demonstrated success managing and mentoring accounting staff, including setting expectations and supporting professional development.

Comfortable operating in a mission-driven, growth-oriented company where finance supports broader social and economic impact.

Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a strong commitment to accuracy and compliance.

Ability to remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods while working at a computer.

Alignment with a mission focused on shrinking the wealth gap by fostering economic growth and inclusivity, including support for small and MWBE businesses.

Work Environment

This is a primarily remote role within a fast-growing organization of approximately 40-50 employees. The core team is based on the East Coast, with a home office presence in the West Chester, PA area and a strong concentration of team members in MD, with additional team members in nearby states such as DE and potentially NC. The position operates on a typical schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with some flexibility as long as responsibilities are fulfilled and deadlines are met. The role reports into ownership and Senior leadership and directly leads a small accounting team that includes a Staff Accountant and a Senior Accountant. You will work extensively with cloud-based tools, including QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel, in a fully remote setup. The environment values effective communication in virtual settings, independent work, and accountability for results. Travel is approximately 10%, primarily to Pennsylvania for quarterly or all-hands meetings about three times per year. This is a Permanent position based out of Philadelphia, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
