LHH is partnering with a growing nonprofit real estate organization who is seeking an Assistant Controller to support corporate accounting operations during a period of organizational growth and restructuring. This role provides high-level oversight across accounting functions while partnering closely with the Director of Finance.
The ideal candidate brings strong accounting fundamentals, a proactive mindset around internal controls, and the ability to navigate complex, multi-entity environments involving grants, contracts, and regulated funding sources.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee corporate accounting functions including month-end close, financial reporting, and general ledger integrity
Provide high-level oversight and guidance to accounting staff, including senior accounting and AP team members
Evaluate and strengthen internal controls, processes, and system workflows
Review and advise on contracts, grants, and cost allocation structures
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and funding restrictions
Partner with leadership to identify risks and escalate issues impacting financial accuracy or compliance
Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, operations, and project teams
Support organizational restructuring efforts by assessing current accounting workflows and identifying opportunities for improvement
Assist with audit readiness and financial documentation standards
Required Qualifications:
Strong accounting background with experience managing full-cycle accounting and close processes
Demonstrated expertise in internal controls and risk management
Experience working in complex, multi-entity environments
Exposure to grants, contracts, or cost allocation structures
Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on in a dynamic environment
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in nonprofit, real estate, or similarly complex industries
Background supporting organizations with diverse funding sources and compliance requirements
CPA preferred but not required
Prior experience in public accounting or multi-industry environments is a plus
