Seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Construction Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations for our construction business.
This role is critical in overseeing job costing, certified payroll compliance, subcontractor billing, and lien management. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of construction accounting practices, including certified payroll reporting, preliminary notices, lien waivers/releases, and project-level financial controls.
The Controller will oversee all financial and job cost accounting functions, prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and manage the month-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and WIP schedules.
The Controller will lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management for construction projects, ensure accurate weekly certified payroll reporting in compliance with Davis-Bacon, DIR, or local prevailing wage laws, and manage fringe benefit reporting and reconciliation.
The Controller will coordinate with HR and payroll providers to maintain compliant labor records for public works projects, prepare and track preliminary notices (20-day notices) for all projects and vendors, and collect, review, and process lien waivers both conditional and unconditional.
In this role the Controller will maintain compliance logs for certificates of insurance, subcontractor waivers, and vendor releases, ensure subcontractor payments are not released without appropriate documentation as well as manage job cost reporting, change order tracking, and cost-to-complete projections.
The Controller will collaborate with project managers to analyze project profitability and budget variances, maintain accurate cost allocations to contracts and support billing processes and supervise accounting staff.
In this role the Controller will implement and maintain internal controls and accounting policies as well as drive continuous improvement in accounting workflows and systems.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA preferred).
5+ years of experience in construction accounting, including certified payroll and lien management.
In-depth knowledge of public works compliance, prevailing wage laws, DIR reporting, and lien procedures.
Experience with ERP systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, Viewpoint, or Procore integrations.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills is a must.
