Job Title: Controller
Job Description
The Controller oversees the company's accounting and financial operations, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and effective financial controls. This leadership role supports executive management with accurate financial data, operational analysis, and strategic insights that drive informed, strategic decision-making. The position is ideal for a hands-on leader with construction or project-based accounting experience who can enhance processes and build structure within a growing organization.
Responsibilities
Oversee all accounting operations, including the general ledger, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.
Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to support management and operational decision-making.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal company policies, and all relevant regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate and timely balance sheet reconciliations and detailed account analyses.
Develop, document, and maintain internal financial controls and accounting procedures to safeguard company assets.
Partner with executive leadership to support strategic planning and operational decision-making through financial insights.
Lead forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis to help drive performance and support business planning.
Assist in developing financial models and KPI reporting to monitor performance and improve business outcomes.
Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve efficiencies, and strengthen internal controls.
Oversee cash flow management, including daily cash monitoring, banking relationships, and treasury functions.
Monitor company liquidity and support working capital planning to ensure adequate funding for operations and growth.
Manage bank reconciliations and support financing activities as needed.
Provide oversight for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and invoicing functions to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Support billing operations, collections, and customer invoicing processes to promote healthy cash flow.
Ensure payroll processes are compliant, timely, and supported by appropriate internal controls.
Coordinate with external auditors, tax professionals, and financial institutions to support audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
Assist with insurance, bonding, and compliance reporting requirements related to financial operations.
Ensure proper accounting treatment of leases, fixed assets, and capital expenditures in accordance with GAAP.
Monitor company expenditures and budget performance to promote cost control and financial discipline.
Implement policies and controls to improve cost management, accountability, and transparency across the organization.
Support project cost tracking and profitability analysis, particularly for construction, utility, or other project-based work.
Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, including overseeing staff performance, workload allocation, and professional growth.
Effectively oversee multiple team members and take full ownership of the accounting department's operations and outcomes.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
5+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
1-3 years of management experience with responsibility for overseeing multiple team members.
Prior controller or senior-level accounting leadership experience preferred.
Construction, utility, or project-based accounting experience strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
Hands-on experience with month-end close, general ledger management, and journal entries.
Proven experience in financial reporting, including preparation and analysis of financial statements.
Experience in budget management, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Ability to oversee AP, AR, payroll, and invoicing functions and ensure accurate month-end processes.
Experience working with ERP and accounting systems; openness to different ERP platforms.
Experience with QuickBooks and the ability to transition to or work with NetSuite.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including VLOOKUP and pivot tables.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on accuracy and detail.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of the accounting function and drive process improvements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in labor or union environments is preferred.
Background in construction, utility, or other project-based industries is highly beneficial.
Experience developing financial models and KPI reporting to support performance management.
Familiarity with cost management practices, including project cost tracking and profitability analysis.
Experience collaborating with external auditors, tax professionals, banks, and other financial institutions.
Ability to design and implement internal controls and accounting procedures for a growing organization.
Proven track record of mentoring and developing accounting staff and building high-performing teams.
Comfort working with evolving systems and processes, including ERP transitions.
Work Environment
This role is based fully on-site, with work performed in the office five days per week. The position follows normal business hours, with flexibility to work additional time when needed to meet deadlines such as month-end close, audits, and key reporting cycles. The environment is fast-paced and growth-oriented, with a focus on improving processes and implementing scalable systems, including the use of ERP platforms such as QuickBooks and NetSuite and advanced Excel-based reporting tools. The Controller works closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional office setting that values accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $125000.00 - $140000.00/yr.
